Packing well for Umrah is about two things: respecting the rules of Ihram and staying comfortable through long hours of walking and prayer. Use this checklist the week before you fly, and keep your carry-on ready for changing into Ihram on the plane.

Documents and money

  • Passport with at least six months’ validity, plus printed and digital copies
  • Visa printout and your Umrah permit in the Nusuk app (see our Nusuk app guide)
  • Meningitis ACYW vaccination certificate
  • Flight tickets, hotel confirmations and your travel agent’s contact number
  • A bank card that works abroad and some Saudi riyals in small notes
  • Travel insurance details, if you bought cover in addition to the visa insurance

Ihram and clothing for men

  • Two Ihram sets (izar and rida) in thick, absorbent cotton or towelling
  • An Ihram belt with zipped pockets for your phone, cards and permit
  • Safety pins — many pilgrims use them to keep the izar secure
  • Sandals that leave the ankle bone and the top of the foot uncovered
  • Loose, breathable clothes for after Umrah, and a light jacket for winter evenings
  • A small drawstring bag for carrying your shoes inside the mosque
Change on the plane? If your flight crosses the Miqat before Jeddah, put one Ihram set, the belt and sandals in your hand luggage so you can change before take-off or in the aircraft washroom.

Clothing for women

  • Loose abayas or long dresses in light, opaque fabric — any colour is permitted
  • Comfortable hijabs or under-scarves that stay in place while walking
  • Socks and closed, cushioned shoes for marble floors and long walks
  • A light cardigan or shawl for air-conditioned halls and Madinah’s cooler nights
  • Sanitary supplies, as shops near the Haram can be crowded at peak hours

Women in Ihram should not wear the niqab or gloves; a loose scarf can be lowered over the face when needed without touching it.

Fragrance-free toiletries

  • Unscented soap, shampoo and deodorant
  • Unscented sunscreen and lip balm
  • Fragrance-free wet wipes and tissues
  • Vaseline or anti-chafing balm — essential for men walking in Ihram
  • A miswak or toothbrush with unscented toothpaste

Health and medicines

  • Regular medicines in original packaging, with a copy of the prescription
  • Painkillers, plasters, blister pads and oral rehydration salts
  • Throat lozenges — dry air and crowds make coughs common
  • A refillable water bottle and a small foldable umbrella for shade
  • A face mask for crowded areas, if you are prone to infections

Worship essentials

  • A pocket Qur’an or app, and a small book of duas for Umrah
  • A tally counter or ring counter to keep track of Tawaf and Sa’i circuits
  • A lightweight prayer mat for crowded courtyards
  • A list of duas that friends and family asked you to make

If you are still learning the rituals, read how to perform Umrah step by step before you pack.

Phone, apps and power

  • An eSIM or Saudi SIM for data, with WhatsApp working for family check-ins
  • The Nusuk app installed and logged in before departure
  • A power bank and a universal adapter — Saudi sockets mostly take the three-pin UK-style plug
  • Offline maps of Makkah and Madinah saved on your phone

What to leave at home

  • Perfume and scented products for use during Ihram (pack them for afterwards if you wish)
  • Large bags — security often restricts bulky bags inside the Haram
  • Valuables and jewellery you would hate to lose in a crowd
  • Heavy books; Qur’ans are available throughout both mosques

Travelling in winter or summer changes what you need — see the best time for Umrah for month-by-month weather.

FAQ

Packing for Umrah: Common Questions

Two sets are ideal: one to wear and a spare in case the first gets dirty or wet. If you plan more than one Umrah, a third set lets you wash and dry the others.

Only unscented products. Ordinary soap, shampoo, wet wipes and deodorant usually contain fragrance, so pack fragrance-free versions labelled “unscented” for the period you are in Ihram.

Most airlines allow one sealed 5-litre bottle of Zamzam per passenger, bought from approved outlets and usually collected at check-in in Jeddah or Madinah. Rules vary by airline, so confirm with yours.

Cards and mobile payments work almost everywhere in Makkah and Madinah, but keep some Saudi riyals in small notes for barbers, taxis and charity.
